DogAge® Tip of the Week

Breed Profile: Meet the Saint Bernard

November 27, 2008

Although born and bred for high-altitude rescue missions and
hauling carts across mountain passes, the mighty

Saint Bernard
easily adjusts to life in the suburban slow
lane. Credit his patient, laid-back disposition for that
low-maintenance attitude, but never forget the potential power
in his massive muscles; and train him before he outweighs you!
As long as a Saint Bernard has a small yard in which to meander,
a long walk every day will satisfy his activity needs. This
intelligent, people-pleasing 110–200-lb. pup loves being with
kids, so start socializing while he's still a lightweight,
loveable fluff-ball.

Check local shelters or rescue groups for dogs of this breed.

Winter Skin-Saver

November 20, 2008

Know how your skin gets dry and itchy in winter? Your dog's skin
struggles with cold weather, overheated houses, and low humidity, too.
Here's how to keep your pooch itch-free:

  • Brush her often. Even shorthaired dogs need help sloughing off
dead skin cells. Brushing stimulates circulation and kicks up
production of natural moisturizers from oil glands.

  • Shampoo less often. Experts warn that weekly baths remove
    much-needed lubricating oils.

  • Keep your own shampoo -- even the gentle one -- on the shelf,
and use a moisturizing doggie-formulated one.

  • If dry skin persists, take Fluffy to the vet. Itching can be a
    sign of something more serious.

So beautiful !!

I found this on a message board that I read every day. I really wanted to share it with you !

A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS........

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

Protect Against Sunburn

Your dog's body is covered with enough fur to protect his skin from the sun, right? Not quite.
Most dogs, especially pale and shorthaired ones, can get burned on the tips of the ears and the bridge of the nose. Damaging ultraviolet rays penetrate the fine hair in these areas, which can burn the fair skin beneath. Bellies and undersides can also get a heavy dose of sun from rays reflected off the sidewalk and sand.
Most vets recommend applying sunscreen to these sensitive areas. Reapply if your pet plays in the water or rolls in the grass.

Not-So-Great Outdoors

Letting your dog romp around as you garden allows for quality bonding time. But beware:

• Insecticides, fertilizers, weed killers, and lawnmower gasoline can all be harmful if your pet laps up even a small amount.
• Chemical treatments used on grass should be dry before letting your dog walk on it. Follow instructions on the product label. If your pup licks the chemicals off his paws, he'll soon have an upset tummy -- or worse.
• Garden plants should not be nibbled. Lily of the valley, azalea, yew, rhododendron, and kalanchoe can cause heart problems; rhubarb leaves and shamrock may lead to kidney failure; and sago palms can damage the liver.
