Protect Against Sunburn

Your dog's body is covered with enough fur to protect his skin from the sun, right? Not quite.
Most dogs, especially pale and shorthaired ones, can get burned on the tips of the ears and the bridge of the nose. Damaging ultraviolet rays penetrate the fine hair in these areas, which can burn the fair skin beneath. Bellies and undersides can also get a heavy dose of sun from rays reflected off the sidewalk and sand.
Most vets recommend applying sunscreen to these sensitive areas. Reapply if your pet plays in the water or rolls in the grass.

Not-So-Great Outdoors

Letting your dog romp around as you garden allows for quality bonding time. But beware:

• Insecticides, fertilizers, weed killers, and lawnmower gasoline can all be harmful if your pet laps up even a small amount.
• Chemical treatments used on grass should be dry before letting your dog walk on it. Follow instructions on the product label. If your pup licks the chemicals off his paws, he'll soon have an upset tummy -- or worse.
• Garden plants should not be nibbled. Lily of the valley, azalea, yew, rhododendron, and kalanchoe can cause heart problems; rhubarb leaves and shamrock may lead to kidney failure; and sago palms can damage the liver.

Dog-owners 'lead healthier lives'

This article that we found on the BBC is very interesting and we wanted to share it with you so we decided to put it on our blog today :

Dog
Dogs can provide companionship
If you want to live a healthier life get a dog, research suggests.

The companionship offered by many pets is thought to be good for you, but the benefits of owning a dog outstrip those of cat owners, the study says.

A psychologist from Queen's University, Belfast, said dog owners tended to have lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

Writing in the British Journal of Health Psychology, she says that regular 'walkies' may partly explain the difference.

Dr Deborah Wells reviewed dozens of earlier research papers which looked at the health benefits of pet ownership.

In some cases, the social support offered by an animal is greater than the support than another human could offer
Dr June McNicholas

She confirmed that pet owners tended in general to be healthier than the average member of the population.

However, her research suggested that dog ownership produced more positive influence than cat ownership.

As well as lower blood pressure and cholesterol, she said dog-owners suffered fewer minor ailments and serious medical problems.

There was also the suggestion that dogs could aid recovery from serious illnesses such as heart attacks, and act as 'early warning' to detect an approaching epileptic seizure.

Stress-busting

Dr Wells said the precise reason for the benefits was not totally clear.

"It is possible that dogs can directly promote our well-being by buffering us from stress, one of the major risk factors associated with ill-health.

"The ownership of a dog can also lead to increases in physical activity and facilitate the development of social contacts, which may enhance both physiological and psychological human health in a more indirect manner."

Dr June McNicholas, a health psychologist who has specialised on research into the health effects of pet ownership said that an important reason for the improved health of dog-owners was not just the exercise received while taking it for walks, but the opportunity for social contact with other dog-owners.

She said: "For older people, an animal can fulfil the 'need to be needed', perhaps after children have left home.

"In some cases, the social support offered by an animal is greater than the support than another human could offer."

Dutch brewers launch dogs' beer

We found this interesting article on BBC News !

Please take a look at it !

A small brewery in the Netherlands has launched a new beer designed to bring cool relief to thirsty dogs.

Kwispelbier, marketed as "a beer for your best friend", is made from a special brew of beef extract and malt.

The beverage is a creation of pet shop owner Gerrie Berendsen, who wanted her dogs to share light refreshments with her after a day's hunting.

The beer is non-alcoholic and fit for human consumption, but costs four times as much as a Heineken.

"Kwispel" is the Dutch word for wagging a tail.

Ms Berendsen, who lives in the eastern town of Zelhem, commissioned the small local Schelde brewery to make and bottle the beer.

"Once a year we go to Austria to hunt with our dogs, and at the end of the day we sit on the verandah and drink a beer. So we thought, my dog also has earned it," Ms Berendsen told the Associated Press.

Pfizer's New Drug for Fat Fidos

Slentrol could help overweight and obese dogs slim down.

We just found that article on MSNBC.COM about a drug that Pfizer just created for overweight dogs and thought that it was really worth sharing it with you as I am sure that you will find it good news !

By Brian Lawler

If you're like me, you find overweight dogs cute. But canines that are 20% or more over their ideal weight are considered obese and are at risk for some serious health issues. If you're a dog owner whose pet needs to go on a diet, then pharmaceutical giant Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) has some good news for you. Last week the Food and Drug Administration approved the company for marketing Slentrol, its treatment to help overweight and obese dogs slim down.

Leaving aside that in many cases dogs become overweight due to being overfed or underexercised, Slentrol could be used by the owners of the 25%-35% of dogs that are overweight and 5% that are obese. How it causes weight loss is not exactly known, but it's hypothesized that the liquid solution causes dogs to eat less and also absorb less of the food that they do eat into their bodies.
