Great News !!

We saw this very interesting article in post-gazette.com and thought that we definitely had to share it with you ! This is really great news ! How can you really confuse a dog toy with a funny name like "Chewy Vuiton" with a real product from the famous Louis Vuitton company ?? It is totally ridiculous !! Congratulations to Haute Diggity Dog for having the courage to take on the big boys !

Take a look at the article !

Tiny firm wins 'Chewy Vuiton' suit, but still feels a bite

Tuesday, November 28, 2006

By Raymund Flandez, The Wall Street Journal

In March, a unit of global luxury-goods powerhouse LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA sued a small Las Vegas maker of dog toys, claiming trademark infringement.

The reason? Louis Vuitton Malletier SA of Paris had a problem with the company, Haute Diggity Dog, putting the name "Chewy Vuiton" on stuffed toys and dog-bed pillows decorated with a pattern reminiscent of Louis Vuitton's logo.

A federal court in Virginia, where Louis Vuitton filed the case, didn't bite. "The fact that the real Vuitton name, marks and dress are strong and recognizable makes it unlikely that a parody -- particularly one involving a pet chew toy and bed -- will be confused with the real product," the judge, James C. Cacheris, wrote in a judgment early this month.

The court sided with Haute Diggity Dog. But the victory came with significant costs. Legal fees, which Haute Diggity Dog had expected to amount to $50,000, skyrocketed to $200,000. The company lost distributors and had merchandise sent back as a result of the legal proceedings. And, Louis Vuitton says it will appeal the verdict. But for now Haute Diggity Dog gets to use the name "Chewy Vuiton" and continue to sell the product.

Doggie Doses

I hope that this little tip will help you if you are like me and have a hard time giving a pill to my pooch !

Do you dread giving pills to your pooch? Try this approach.

First, place your palm on top of her snout, with your fingers on one side of her mouth and thumb on the other. Gently lift the lips and insert your index finger behind the long upper teeth on one side and your thumb behind the long upper teeth on the other side. You may need to squeeze lightly to accomplish this. When you do, pull her nose up and with your other hand drop the pill in the back of the mouth, behind the hump of the tongue. Close her mouth and immediately bring her nose back down, holding her mouth shut. She should swallow right away. If she doesn't, try blowing on her nose or squirting water into the side of her mouth with a turkey baster.

Keep Your Pets Safe on Halloween

We are getting closer and closer to Halloween and The Humane Society of the United States is reminding us how to celebrate it whilst keeping our pets safe !

It is always a good idea to have these tips in mind !

Jack-o'-lanterns, trick-or-treaters, haunted houses and costume parties. Halloween is full of fun things for you and your family to enjoy, but it's one of those holidays that is enjoyed more by people than by pets. Keep the following precautions in mind when preparing for the frightfully fun festivities and help ensure that everyone in your family—including your pet—has a safe Halloween.

Keep your pet in a quiet place, away from trick-or-treaters and other Halloween activities. You may know that the miniature monsters and goblins who come knocking on Halloween aren't real, but pets don't. Dogs and cats are creatures of habit and could become frightened or agitated by the unaccustomed sights and sounds of costumed visitors. In addition, frequently opened doors provide a perfect opportunity for escape, which can go unnoticed during all the commotion. Be sure all pets are wearing collars and ID tags in case of an accidental getaway.

Dog owners warned against sugar-free items

We just read this article on MSNBC and we thought that we would share it with you ! It is very interesting !

Commonly used artificial sweetener can cause canine liver failure.

NEW YORK - Keep those sugarless treats out of Fido’s reach. Veterinarians warned Friday that a commonly used sweetener might cause liver failure in dogs, and perhaps even kill them.
Their report in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association appears to strengthen the suspected link between the sugar substitute xylitol, thought to make dogs sick, and possible liver failure.
Xylitol, a naturally occurring product, is found in many sugar-free chewing gums, candies, baked goods and toothpastes.

Keep the Water Flowing

Do you think that leaving your puppy's water dish dry sometimes may help curb housetraining accidents? Think again.

Housetraining may actually be even more difficult if your puppy doesn't get an adequate amount of water. A dehydrated pup has a higher risk of developing urinary problems -- such as infections or kidney stones -- that would make bladder control even harder. Limit drinking water only at bedtime.

Dogs Eating Grass

I found a very interesting article on Pedigree.com about dogs eating grass. I am sure that many of you have wondered why dogs are eating grass.

They do not eat grass because they have worms or because they don't feel well or because they have a nutritional deficiency or because they're going through a particular developmental stage. They eat grass because they like the taste !
Apparently you can even find containers available at pet stores that allow you to grow your own grain-based grass for both dogs and cats.
Interesting don't you think ?

Fenced In

Dog-proof your yard to prevent loss or injury.

Remove any toxic materials that your dog could eat and surround your yard with a strong fence -- wood, chain, or electronic. Make sure it's the right height. If your dog can look over the fence while standing on his hind legs, there is a chance the collar will get caught, which may choke him. A breakaway collar, designed to break open when pressure is applied, will help prevent such accidents in an unsupervised yard.

Canine Condo

Temperament and energy level matter more than breed when fitting a dog into a small living space.

All dogs need exercise, so if possible, select an apartment or condo near a park or walking trails. Try to go home at lunch to walk your dog, or hire a walking service. Fill toys with food to keep your dog entertained indoors, and block the view out front windows to prevent excessive barking. And enjoy lots of quality playtime with your pooch.

Camp Out

Exploring the great outdoors with your dog can be a wonderful experience. Prepare your pooch with shorter hikes in the weeks before a trip, and don't forget the flea and tick treatment. Carry plenty of bottled water, food, and a short leash attached to a dog harness. A healthy dog without joint problems can carry about one-quarter of his weight in a backpack, but don't give a pack to dogs under the age of 1 year. Check your pet's paws regularly for soreness or debris, and frequently stop in the shade for rest and water, because your dog probably won't complain when tired.

Frozen Treats for Dogs

We are enjoying very nice temperatures on the East Coast right now but it can be really too hot for our friends from time to time !

So why not give them a very healthy treat which will be at the same time easy to make, low-cost, and highly refreshing !

Just take an ice cube tray and fill it with just chicken or beef broth and then freeze it. That's it !

When your pooch seems to be a little warm, just give him or her, this "special" ice cube to refresh ! You will be surprised to see how much they like it !

Do you have your own recipe that you would like to share with us ? Any tips for our Bistro blog ?

Vacations with your pet

As summer is getting closer and closer, a lot of people will go away for a few days to enjoy the sun, fishing, boating, hiking, etc...

I was just curious to know what most of you will do with your pet, when vacation time comes.

  • Do you take your pet with you ?
  • Do you leave your pet with a sitter ?
  • Do you board your pet ?

If, unfortunately, your pooch can't join you, do you feel maybe guilty, that she or he is staying behind ?

Are your vacation always planned to include your pet ?

It is great to see that nowadays, more and more places are taking pets, maybe with an additional fee but who cares then, if you can be together ?

I would love to hear your comments on this subject ! So don't be shy and drop me a line ! Thanks !

Have a wonderful summer !

Pets Included in U.S. Emergency Plans

Please take a look at this article from Animal Planet News ; I didn't want to waste any time so you can enjoy the good news !

June 5, 2006 — Animal welfare advocates on Wednesday said they had worked with the U.S. government to develop new measures to protect pets in the event of another natural disaster like Hurricane Katrina, in which tens of thousands of pets died.

"We remember Katrina. That's why we have pushed for including animals in the rescue plans," said Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society.

The group says that at least 50,000 pets died because no emergency plans were in place to save them after Hurricane Katrina flooded huge swaths of the U.S. Gulf Coast in August 2005.

Don't forget the sunscreen - for your pet

Summer is right around the corner, so again, a little reminder of some tips for keeping your dogs and cats safe :

Sunscreen, check. Plenty of fresh water, check. Swimming lessons, check. Flea control, check.

Flea control? This list isn’t for you or your kids — it’s for your pets. Summertime brings picnics, fun in the sun, and swimming in pools or open water — good times that are tarnished only by stinging or biting insects, heatstroke, sunburn, skin problems and water hazards, to name the most common summer-related dangers that face dogs and cats.

Here’s what you need to know to recognize and prevent problems:

Itchy and scratchy

When the weather turns warm, fleas hatch and animals get itchy. “We see this manifest itself as sores and scabs on dogs and cats,” says Susan McClung Davis, a veterinarian at Aliso Beach Animal Clinic in Laguna Beach, Calif. “Many animals are allergic to fleas, and all it takes is one flea for them to bite and scratch themselves raw.”

Bees, wasps, fire ants and mosquitoes are other painful pests of summer. Dogs or cats that take a curious or aggressive interest in bees or wasps are likely to receive payback in the form of a sting on the nose or head.
